Choosing the Right Path {39/52}

This one is dedicated to anyone who is at a crossroads with pursing their dreams.

Have you ever been so passionate about something that it's all you can think about? You live and breathe it. You even dream about it in your sleep, or if you're like me, it keeps you awake some nights because you can't stop thinking about it. I think the hardest thing for most of us is finding that passion. Most of us aren't lucky enough to figure it out early in life, when we can actually do something about it. Most of us don't figure it out until much later, when we have those pesky little things like responsibilities and obligations to hold us back. So we allow ourselves to make excuses as to why we can't pursue our dreams, and we give up on them. But why should you sell yourself short? After all, we only have one life to live, so why not make it the one you want?

Choosing between reality and obligations versus pursuing your dreams is never an easy choice to make. But a dream is only a dream until it’s acted on; it’s only then that it starts its slow transformation into reality. You're always going to have that one fear lingering in the back of your mind. What if I fail? Don’t be too discouraged when you face failure though. Keep moving forward, and things will come together. Perseverance is one of your best allies.

You see, I had plenty of excuses when I started this journey. I work a full time job, I have bills to pay, a family, I don't have time, or a college degree. But despite those excuses, I decided to try anyway. What's the worst that could happen, right? I could fail...lose everything...the whole world could fall into despair? Okay, now I'm exaggerating a little, but that's what fear does to you. It leaves you paralyzed, standing at two paths, not knowing which one to take. Do I follow my heart? Or do I follow logic? Logic is going to tell you to take the easy path, the one that is sure and true. But your heart wants to take the risky path, the one where all your dreams could come true or you could fail miserably.

I've already faced a lot of failures on this path so far. I've been rejected by countless magazines that I've submitted my work to, and some days I feel like I'm putting all this hard work into something that may never turn into anything. That's part of the journey though. If it were easy, then everyone would do it. It's those rejections and failures that make us stronger. I choose to learn from them and keep going. If I gave up every time someone told me no, or every time something was just too hard, then I'd never get anywhere. So after all that rejection, why continue with this insanity? Because I believe in myself. And you should too. Just believe in yourself and never stop believing. You'll always come across someone who will question your path. They'll think you're crazy for following your dreams. But that is their own fear talking. Don't listen to it. And don't listen to your own fears either. Now, I'm not saying you should quit your job to become a rock star, with no plan in place. After all, you may have to keep one toe in reality for a little while, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't start taking small steps down the path to your dreams.

So I'll leave you with this small piece of advice. The most courageous action you can take is to keep moving forward. Don’t worry about where the path will take you. Don’t worry about failing. Worry about what happens if you don’t start the journey. Because that's what you should really be fearing.... waking up someday and wondering what would have happened if I had just TRIED.
