Aries is the first sign of the zodiac and a born leader. A bundle of energy and dynamism, Ariens lead people along with their charm and charisma. A sign ruled by fire, they can be a bit impulsive, which I know all to well because my husband is an Aries, but the great strength of the Aries-born is in their initiative, courage and determination.
My friend, Joyce, was kind enough to volunteer for Aries, even though she's technically a Taurus by a few days. When we met for the shoot, I initially envisioned the fire coming from her head since this sign is governed by the head, but in editing I changed the layout a bit. I really wanted this image to show Joyce's strength and independence, because that's how I see her, but the fire coming from her head made her look a bit hot headed and completely changed the tone of the image. I know she's been through a lot in her life, but she remains strong and courageous, and that's what I admire most about her. So I moved the fire behind her to create a greater sense of strength, as she emerges from the fire with grace and beauty.
This series is very important to me because the models that have volunteered for this project are all women that I admire. They aren't tooth pick models that are hired for magazines, but "real" women, and that's what I want to showcase through this project. All women are beautiful and no one is perfect. I ask my friends not to wear make-up on shoot because I truly believe they are all naturally beautiful and don't need it. My hope is to show women that they should embrace who they are because we are all perfect just the way God made us, with all of our imperfections, and that's what makes us unique.
I want to thank Joyce Martell for being my lovely model, as well as Aundrea Potter and Henry Fishburne for assisting on shoot. This image would not have been possible without each and everyone of you. Thank you SO much! (P.S. to Joyce....sorry for making you balance on a hay stack, when that didn't even make it into the image...nothing ever seems to work out like planned, but that's just the way life goes I guess. Thanks for being such a good sport!)
